The best jeans and a nice top combos to buy now

“Jeans and a nice top” is an outfit formula so foolproof, it’s practically a dress code in itself. It’s a winning option when you want to feel smart but not overdressed, comfortable yet confident, put-together without having tried too hard. In other words, it’s the perfect combination for party season.
“There’s something inherently feminine and effortlessly luxurious about jeans and a beautiful top,” says Marianne McDonald, creative director of denim brand, Citizens of Humanity. “Jeans ground the look with ease, while refined knits and silk shirts bring softness, sophistication, and a sense of modern elegance. There’s a thoughtful balance of polish and ease that feels elevated and deliberate.”
In the Noughties, jeans and a nice top became shorthand for a specific kind of night out, spurred on by Keira Knightley in low-rise denim and ab-baring crop tops and Victoria Beckham’s bootcuts. Like so many hallmarks of “Y2K” fashion, it’s now become a nostalgia-fuelled trend for Gen Zs on TikTok.

Mercifully, there are also some more recent sources from which to draw inspiration. See Reese Witherspoon on a recent New York outing, dressing up a trusty pair of straight-leg jeans with a square-neck Alessandra Rich top, cropped at just the right length to sit above the mid-rise waist without flashing any midriff. Or Dakota Johnson, who recently proved the effortless power of an all-black outfit – especially when anchored with a great pair of flares.

Meanwhile, recent catwalks have displayed new – and retro – combinations to ponder. Chemena Kamali’s Chloé collections have revived the label’s boho aesthetic, with subtly flared jeans and lace-detail camisoles and blouses – an AW25 signature. The mood has infiltrated the high street in the form of pretty lace trims, which can be spotted adorning silky slip-style dresses and tops that layer perfectly over denim.
More recently, Stella McCartney brought back a new take on another Noughties classic – the peplum top, which cropped up in the designer’s SS26 collection. Like it or loathe it, this hourglass silhouette makes a great match for jeans, and there are plenty of subtle takes out there if you’re not ready for another trend renaissance just yet.

Other options that feel contemporary include asymmetric detail. This might be a subtly draped off-the-shoulder cut, a one-sleeve style or a hem that trails elegantly into a unilateral point. Just think “off-centre” and you’ll find yourself, conversely, on point.
At this time of year, jeans are also an ideal way to temper a proper party top. Statement, balloon-inspired sleeves feel fittingly festive; tulle, velvet and metallic fabrics will suit maximalists, while puffed shorter sleeves will slot more seamlessly into minimalist wardrobes.
Finally, there are the sequins and embellishments that feel, for many, irresistible during party season. Try a glitzy collar or cuff if you’re sceptical.
Good jeans
As for the jeans, you’ll likely have plenty of pairs waiting in the wardrobe already. But if you’re in the market for a new pair, Cos has some of the best on the high street, unless you’re after an investment option (London-based Bell St is a good independent name to know). Wherever you land on the price spectrum, be prepared to try before you buy.

“Finding the perfect jeans is really about understanding your own proportions and personality,” says McDonald. “Denim should elevate you effortlessly – through the rise, the fabric, the wash. When those elements fall into alignment, you don’t just see the fit, you feel it. That’s when a pair becomes a true wardrobe staple.
“My best advice? Go into a shop and try on a range of silhouettes. The more you explore, the more you’ll start to recognise what genuinely works for you.”
