Colin Farrell just revealed his favorite sandwich (Margot Robbie loves it, too)

Margot Robbie famously ate one every day on set.

Crisp sandwiches have officially entered the chat, and if my Irish grandmothers could see the hype, they’d each be having a hearty chuckle. When you grow up with three Irish grandparents (like I did), crisp sandwiches are a childhood staple. Where there is bread, butter, and pretty much any form of potato, you will likely find a family with proud Irish roots.

Thanks to Colin Farrell, who famously made his “chippy sandwich” for co-star Margot Robbie each day on the set of A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, this nostalgic Irish classic has taken social media by storm. The actor jokes that he was impressed by Robbie’s commitment to “ABE: Always Be Eating” and shares that he prepared a chippy sandwich every night for her to enjoy the next day on set.

What Is a Crisp Sandwich?

There are just three ingredients that go into making a proper crisp sandwich. You’ll need sliced white sandwich bread, butter, and potato chips. Aside from its simplicity, the magic of this sandwich comes from the contrast of flavors and textures. Pillowy, chewy, and slightly sweet sandwich bread, creamy and rich butter, and crunchy, savory chips bring everything you need to the table in one delicious handheld bite after another.

Farrell describes the crisp sandwich as his “favorite snack in the world.” This declaration, in addition to making it daily for his snack-loving co-star, makes him the perfect teacher to guide us through a quick, simple, crisp sandwich tutorial.

How To Make Colin Farrell’s Chippy Sandwich

To prepare an authentic crisp sandwich, Farrell lists three specific ingredients:

  • A loaf of Brennan’s, a popular Irish bakery brand. The Family Pan loaf, which is sliced white sandwich bread, is crucial.
  • An ample amount of salted Irish butter, preferably Kerrygold.
  • A bag of Tayto Cheese & Onion Crisps. As the dominant chip brand in Farrell's homeland, Tayto is often described as the “Lays of Ireland.”

Farrell says to spread a very generous amount of Kerrygold butter onto each slice of the thick white bread, then top one slice with a few handfuls of Tayto crisps. Next, close the sandwich, pressing down with some force to crush the chips. It’s that simple! The resulting sandwich is fluffy, crispy, crunchy, creamy, toasty, and savory all at once.

Alternatives to the Classic Crisp Sandwich

If you can’t make it to Ireland for a loaf of Brennans and a bag of Tayto’s Cheese & Onion chips, fear not! There are several ways to make a crisp sandwich work here in the States.

Options similar to Brennan’s Family Pan loaf include Pepperidge Farm Farmhouse Hearty White (my personal recommendation), Sara Lee Artesano Bread, or Wonder Classic White Bread. Chips similar to Tayto’s include Keogh’s Cheese and Onion and Ruffles Cheddar & Sour Cream.

Luckily, Kerrygold butter is available in most large chain grocery stores.

Your creation may not be 100 percent traditional, but these alternative ingredients will allow you to experience the magic of Colin Farrell and Margot Robbie’s iconic chippy sandwich. Like Farrell and so many of us with roots in Ireland, the crisp sandwich may just become one of your family’s favorite snacks, too.
