Woman adopts a 'senior' bulldog from shelter — then realizes she got catfished
When Brittany Devan first brought Penelope home, she thought she was a senior dog who was on her last leg of life. She was supposedly found as a stray, but Devan suspects she was actually dumped because of how sick she was.
“My first reaction was, ‘Oh my God. She is so miserable,’” Devan told The Dodo.
The sweet bulldog kept getting overlooked at the shelter because of how hard she was struggling. Devan was really worried that Penelope wasn’t going to make it, but after she started a new medication, the pup began to get better and stronger every day. That was when Devan realized that Penelope wasn’t old and dying — she was just really, really sick.
It turns out that Penelope catfished her way into a new home, because the cheeky bulldog was actually only around 3 years old.
Part of the reason everyone thought Penelope was so much older also had to do with how timid and hesitant she was, but actually, she’d just never had the space to truly be a dog before. Her new family taught her how, and before long, the sick “senior” dog had transformed into the most energetic pup Devan had ever seen.
“She was very gentle and nervous through all of her first experiences for about a month,” Devan said. “Now she’s a completely different dog. She’s like our own catfish.”
These days, Penelope loves playing with toys, running all over the place and making her mom laugh constantly. She definitely isn’t who her family expected, but they love her exactly the way she is.
“The first few years of her life weren’t great, so I’ve dedicated the rest of my life to making the rest of her life the best she’ll ever have,” Devan said.
