We asked 3 grandmas to name the best boxed cake mix, and they all said the same thing

Spring baking season is finally here, and while we love to whip things up from scratch, some of the best desserts start with the help of a little bit of boxed mix. I mean, just ask grandmas! I chat with a lot of grandmas for recipe advice, and time and time again, boxed cake mix reigns supreme as their favorite baking shortcut for excellent cakes, easy-peasy crinkle cookies, and all sorts of other treats.

But which is the best?! This was the question on my mind, so I asked a few grandmas who've got years of baking experience under their belts to share their favorite store-bought mix. And what do you know - there was one name that came up again and again: Betty Crocker Yellow Cake Mix. Here's why this under $2 cake mix is their go-to.

The Best Cake Mix, According to Grandmas

The first grandma I talked to was, obviously, my own. She's a chef by trade (the greatest Thai chef I know!), but baking hasn't always been her strong suit. She told me that instead of homemade cakes, she'd always reach for a box of ol' reliable Betty Crocker Yellow Cake Mix. She's tried others but always comes back to this classic.

My chat with my grandmother naturally led to a larger conversation with my team at work. According to Alex, our assistant editor, her grandma is also a Betty Crocker Yellow Cake Mix superfan. "My grandma always buys a yellow cake mix with chocolate frosting," she told me. "It's a classic and my dad's favorite. She always liked to make it for birthdays."

I then asked my good friend Jaime what her grandma liked to use (because she always talks so fondly about her grandma's cakes). She said that her grandma was big on Betty Crocker cake mixes (of all kinds!), but especially Betty Crocker Yellow Cake Mix. She asked her grandma, and she said, "Here was an angel food cake mix that my mother used to use and she'd make the angel food cake and then she'd put icing on it, which was whipped cream and chocolate mixed together and it was wonderful. In fact, my nephew Ralphie had to have that for his birthday every year. In fact, it makes my mouth water thinking about it."
