Spoilers ahead.

If you’ve spent enough time in The Summer I Turned Pretty trenches—reading the books, watching the series, and perhaps dissecting them both via TikTok—then you should know by now that Conrad and Belly’s love story is never really over.

It’s true, Belly finally chose Team Conrad when the popular Prime Video adaptation aired its series finale in September 2025, with the soulmates finally realizing that a) Paris is indeed always a good idea, and b) they’ve always been meant for each other. But shortly after the episode dropped, creator Jenny Han (who also wrote the books from which the show is adapted) surprised fans with some exciting news: The couple’s happily-ever-after hasn’t arrived just yet. Another chapter is on the way. And, per Han, “only a movie” will do.

The announcement arrived during a red-carpet celebration for the season 3 finale in—where else?—Paris. Here’s what else you need to know about the upcoming The Summer I Turned Pretty film.

What will the movie be about?

According to a press release from Prime Video, the feature film will be written and directed by Han herself, and will at last “conclude” The Summer I Turned Pretty saga. Plot details are, of course, under wraps, but Han teased in an official statement that “there is another big milestone left in Belly’s journey.” (Could this mean Belly has another wedding to plan? This time with a different Fisher brother...and a different ring?)

Han also spoke with Variety about the final moments of the series finale, in which Conrad and Belly return to Cousins. In this scene, Belly’s bob has grown out, indicating a time jump for the couple. When asked how big of a jump forward the movie would take, Han replied, “No, I can’t say how far ahead it is, but it is ahead.”

What else has Jenny Han said about the film?

In her first official statement about the film, Han said, “I thought only a movie could give [the conclusion] its proper due. I’m so grateful to Prime Video for continuing to support my vision for this story and for making it possible to share this final chapter with the fans.”

Then, in a separate interview with ELLE UK in mid-September, Han added, “I’m still in the script stages” and shared that “the show ends as they’re just finding their way back to each other, so the movie will offer a look more at the two of them together.”

In December 2025, during TheWrap’s 2025 Power Women Summit, Han said that the script is officially done, but production hasn’t started. “[I] just wrote it,” she said. “We have not filmed anything yet.”

Has the movie started filming?

Yes—Deadline confirmed that the movie started filming in Wilmington, North Carolina on April 27, but in the time since, there have been disruptions from fans on set.

The official X account for the show shared a message asking fans of the show to stay away from set and related filming location, in order to give production and the cast the space needed to create the movie.

“We love the excitement, but sharing locations and visiting set disrupts filming and creates real safety concerns for our cast and crew,” the message—shared along with a video of writing on the beach that spelled out “PRIVACY PLEASE”—read. “We’re working hard to create a protected bubble to make the best movie possible. Please help us protect the magic of Cousins until it’s ready to be shared.”

Jenny Han also shared a message to her Instagram Story, in which she explained that the unauthorized set visits repeatedly halt the filming process.

“When people come to set, film, and share videos, it disrupts the work. It makes it harder for actors to get into character and causes unnecessary anxiety for them. We often have to stop production to clear crowds from the shot, which breaks the crew's focus,” she wrote. “This story means a lot to me, and I know it means a lot to you, too. I want to give you the best version of this movie. Please help protect our process.”

When will the movie come out?

We’ll have to wait a little bit longer for an official release date. “It’s still a little too soon to say,” Han told TODAY on Sept. 18, 2025. “But Sarah Kucserka, who is my co-showrunner, and I have finished a draft, so we’re trudging along.” She also added, “We don’t know when it’s coming out, but [it won’t be] next year.”

The author then reiterated to Variety that the movie wouldn’t be out next year. “I don’t know when it will be out, but I don’t think it’s safe to say next year because we haven’t filmed it yet,” she said. “I honestly, really want that extra time, because it’s just getting the actors a little bit closer to adulthood. We’re getting to see Belly at 15, turning 16, and then seeing her as this young woman. And now Lola is 22! I think that I always wanted some distance for the movie, so I’m really glad to get that breathing space.”

Finally, on Oct. 6, 2025, Han busted a popular fan theory when she posted a video to her Instagram account recapping an event she co-hosted with Airbnb. In the video’s voiceover, she describes a Q&A during the event. “People asked me questions, like, ‘When is the movie coming out?’” she says. “And I told them, ‘Not this Christmas.’” Since the finale aired, fanshavespeculated whether the film might have a surprise Christmas 2025 release date, given that the finale credits feature photos of Belly and Conrad celebrating the holiday. (And a Christmas 2025 release would, technically, adhere to Han’s promise that the film would not come out in 2026.) But Han has repeatedly quashed that idea, and denied it once and for all in her voiceover. “I am very sorry, but I’m not lying to you guys,” she concluded. Guess we’ll just have to wait for our next Christmas in Cousins.
