NBC's 'Grosse Pointe Garden Society' set in Detroit suburb canceled after 1 season

As the 2025 fall season fast approaches, it’s time to say goodbye and thank you to “Grosse Pointe Garden Society.”

NBC’s recent cancellation of the quirky, stylish mystery made it official that the bloom was off the primetime show set in suburban Detroit. Premiering in late February, "Grosse Pointe Garden Society" wrapped its first season in mid-May, leaving behind 13 episodes about four members of the green-thumbs club with secrets buried amidst the greenery.

The series starring Melissa Fumero, Aja Naomi King, Ben Rappaport and AnnaSophia Robb was created by Jenna Bans and Bill Krebs, whose previous NBC show, 2018-21’s “Good Girl,” was also set in suburban Detroit and followed three desperate housewives who turned to crime.

Krebs provided the Motor City credibility for both series. He grew up in Grosse Pointe Park, then divided his time between there and Birmingham after his parents divorced.

An alum of Birmingham’s Seaholm High School and Ann Arbor’s University of Michigan, Krebs was inspired partly to create a garden club setting by his late father, whose own interest in gardening put him among the winners of a beautification award covered in 2009 by the Grosse Pointe News.

NBC considered giving “Grosse Pointe Garden Society” a reprieve by moving it to the network's sister streamer, Peacock, but the network ultimately felt that its lagging ratings wouldn’t be enough to sustain the series, reports Deadline.

Cast members expressed their sadness on social media. Wrote Melissa Fumero (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”) on Instagram of her character, a disgraced socialite and best-selling author, “Oh, Birdie. You were one for the books. You felt like an amalgamation of every role I’ve ever played. I’ll miss so many things about this job, but most of all I will miss the incredible group of humans it brought together… It’s really hard to make a show. Even harder to keep it on air. I’ll forever be proud of what we made. Thanks for watching."

Although “Grosse Pointe Garden Society” looked convincing in its stately affluence, the actually series was filmed in Atlanta because of Georgia’s film tax incentives.
