Yesterday, Kate stepped out in a double-breasted coatdress that nodded to a look once worn by the Princess of Wales who came before her.

Kate’s was a gray piece with white nautical-inspired trim and white buttons, from British designer Tolu Coker—an artist with close ties to the royal family. The royal wore the piece with a matching gray hat adorned with a white bow, as well as other coordinating accessories: dark gray pumps and her Mulberry micro bag in black croc.

For one final nod to her late mother-in-law, Kate wore her favorite Collingwood pearl and diamond drop earrings, which once belonged to Lady Di.

Diana’s coatdress—which she wore during a visit to Dartmouth Naval College in 1989—was not gray, but bright red, and designed by Catherine Walker (one of Kate’s now go-to designers). Like Kate’s, it had white detailing and buttons, and was made even more nautical by the hat it was paired with: a large piece from Philip Somerville with a wide, elevated brim. A white top, red pumps, a red clutch, and pearl earrings completed Diana’s elegant look.
