Why Princess Kate got away with daring cream dress to Peter Phillips' royal wedding

Kate wore a bracelet belonging to the late Princess Diana
The Princess of Wales got away with dodging a golden wedding rule at Peter Phillips' royal wedding to NHS nurse Harriet Sperling on Saturday.
When it comes to wedding guest attire, light shades and colours like white, cream and ivory tend to be off the cards so as to not clash with the bride on her big day. But for her husband Prince William's cousin's wedding over the weekend, Kate arrived in a gorgeous cream dress teamed with matching coloured accessories.
The royal looked elegant in a tweed Roland Mouret midi dress with button details on the front and inverted pleats through the skirt. To finish off her wedding ensemble, she selected a pair of nude pointed-toe heels and a wide-brimmed Jane Taylor boater hat, which she wore over her lightly curled brunette tresses. The royal kept her glam soft for the occasion.
While Kate's dress was a lighter shade than often worn at weddings, cream is not an uncommon choice for high society wedding guests – even the late Queen opted for an unconventional colour at her son King Charles' wedding to Queen Camilla.
Relaxed royal wedding rule
At her son's 2005 wedding to Camilla, the late Queen Elizabeth II wore a creamy white overcoat and a matching hat. While shades of white are typically reserved for the bride, the Queen coordinated with Camilla, who wore a pale blue for her wedding.
The royal wedding rules for guests tend to be more relaxed the second time around, as also appeared to be the case with Peter's wedding to Harriet on 6 June. Saturday marked Princess Anne's son's second time down the aisle after previously tying the knot with Autumn Phillips in 2008. The pair were married up until 2021.
Peter and Harriet's colour scheme
As goes for any wedding, the dress code depends on how strict the bride is. Kate's cream look tied in perfectly with a light yellow colour scheme worn by several other members of the royal family.
Queen Camilla attended in a lovely cream dress and yellow-brimmed hat while her husband King Charles coordinated with her in a matching butter yellow waistcoat. Princess Anne also opted to wear the bright colour for her son's wedding, looking like a proud mother-of-the-groom in a silky yellow hat which matched the colour of her jacket.
For her bridal moment, Harriet was radiant in a white column shape dress by Emilia Wickstead with long lace sleeves.
Her three bridesmaids – Harriet's daughter Georgina and Peter's daughters Savannah and Isla Phillips – all looked lovely in matching white dresses from the same luxury designer.
