Kamala Harris Swaps Her Signature Pantsuit for a Sequined Plum Gown

It's not often we see Harris in sequins.

The Gist

  • Former Vice President Kamala Harris appeared at the Phoenix Awards during the Congressional Black Caucus' Annual Legislative Conference on September 27.
  • She traded in her signature pantsuit for a sequined plum purple gown by Sergio Hudson.
  • “Sergio Hudson’s designs—a reflection of his vision and artistry—embody confidence, dignity, and pride,” Harris told Vogue

Kamala Harris made a rare appearance at last night's 2025 Phoenix Awards Dinner in Washington, D.C. where she received a special award for her exceptional work in promoting policies and creating opportunities that support the empowerment of the Black community. Ditching her signature pantsuit outfit forumla, Harris had a rare gown moment at the event. And naturally, she used the opportunity to champion a Black designer. She opted for a Sergio Hudson gown, which was covered in delicate plum colored sequins. The off-the-shoulder dress featured long elegant sleeves and a cinched waist, before falling in a glamorous maxi skirt. Harris completed the look with touches of gold jewelry and a waved side-parted hair style.

“Sergio Hudson’s designs—a reflection of his vision and artistry—embody confidence, dignity, and pride,” Harris told Vogue of her look. “I am honored to celebrate his talent and the ways he is helping to shape the future of American fashion.”

It's rare to see Harris in a gown—after all, she is known to have a real penchant for the pantsuit. Just take last October's forest green number or tan suit or last September's mauve ensemble.

In her memoir 107 Days, Harris opened up about her love of the pantsuit, explaining that it all came down to practicality. "Women need to add time for hairstyling, makeup, and more complicated apparel choices, including not repeating the same outfit too often...If you're going to be photographed getting in and out of numerous SUVs and climbing stairs on windy tarmacs, [pantsuits] offer less chance of a wardrobe malfunction," she wrote.

Of course, for special occasions, Harris does sometimes give her pantsuit outfit formula a day off. Last September, she appeared at the same Phoenix Awards wearing another sequined gown by African American designer LaQuan Smith. She also made a surprise appearance at this year's Met Gala in a black and white gown by Off-White.
