Selena Gomez's 2 Wedding Dresses Analyzed by Pros: 'Homegrown Elegance'

The “Only Murders in the Building” actor, whom Blanco called a “real life Disney princess,” shared photos of two Ralph Lauren looks share wore for the Sept. 27 wedding.

Below, wedding industry experts break down the messages Gomez's dresses are sending. Here's a closer look at both looks — and why she might have chosen them.

Dress No. 1

Gomez's first wedding dress, which she shared in an Instagram post, was a satin gown with a halter neckline finished with embroidery and 3D florals.

Gomez paired the dress with a lily-of-the-valley bouquet and 12-carat diamond earrings by Tiffany & Co.

Wedding gown designer Hayley Paige tells TODAY.com that Gomez’s first look “exuded softness, touched with old-Hollywood romance.” The bouquet choice “evoked an effortless, cinematic grace.”

While Gomez has not revealed an inspiration behind her looks, Mignonette Bridal founder Kpoene Kofi Bruce relates the first dress’ silhouette and "dramatic plunging back” to the style of 1940s actor Rita Hayworth.

“It is a refreshing take after years of strapless ballgowns or slinky bias-cut slips,” she adds. Her hair, styled in a short bob with sweeping ends, also evokes old Hollywood.

Dress No. 2

Blanco shared photos of Gomez's second bridal look, which she appeared to wear for the reception. It was another halter neck gown designed by Ralph Lauren, this time made out of lace.

By going from satin to lace, Seo sees Gomez “(completing) the transformation from girl next door to grown-up icon.”

“Lace can easily veer into matronly territory if handled poorly, but here it felt fresh, youthful, and perfectly on point,” he continues.

Kristen Coke, founder of The Wedding Strategist and a cultural events content creator, thinks lace signals intimacy with her guests.

“Lace is more delicate, but there’s an intimacy there,” Coke says. “It feels like she’s like leaning into like that romance and vulnerability.”

Put them together, Paige says, and the two dresses tell a story of "duality."

“One leaned into quiet elegance, the other into celebratory sparkle, together forming a radiant bridal duet,” she says.

Why Ralph Lauren?

This isn’t Ralph Lauren’s first bridal moment of the year — Gomez’s longtime friend Taylor Swift wore the designer in her engagement photos with fiancé Travis Kelce. The $398 silk halter dress Swift wore sold out in minutes.

Coke thinks the designer is sending a message for both Gomez and Swift.

“When you’re choosing your designer for your wedding dress, you’re choosing a partner in your storytelling,” she says.

She points out that while Lauren designs couture, the brand also has off-the-rack styles, making the designer one that bridges worlds.

“There’s a richness to Ralph Lauren that’s not about flash, it’s about legacy. These two billionaire superstar women choosing this subdued but elegant, accessible but elevated designer feels like the right note to hit,” she says.

Paige says Gomez added “a layer of classic romanticism and Americana" by wearing Ralph Lauren — "a kind of homegrown elegance that feels both aspirational and relatable."
