Brits warned of travel chaos as UK airports to see busiest Christmas in history
Last year, 22 million passengers flew in December alone - and this year is set to be no different, with travel during the period a 'perfect storm of stress'.
It comes after the Civil Aviation Authority's (CAA) latest aviation trends report confirms that 2025 saw the busiest summer ever for UK aviation.
The UK's aviation regulator is working with the industry to prepare for the busiest Christmas in history as tens of millions are predicted to take to the skies in December.
Chris Harrington, travel expert and managing director at airport transfer comparison site hoppa, said: 'There is no doubt that festive travel is bound to be among the busiest in years, with most airports operating at close to maximum capacity.
'London Heathrow alone recorded more than seven million passengers travelling during December 2024, and this year is set to be no different.
'Festive travel can be intense for a number of reasons.

'You're dealing with potentially unstable weather, bulky excess luggage, layered clothing, and sometimes additional family members like children. All of which can create a perfect storm of stress.'
He added: 'Minor delays can build up quickly at this time of year, and you can expect longer queues, last-minute disruptions, and congestion, especially in the days following up to December 25.
'Allow additional time for check-in, security and getting your bearings of the airport, as congestion will be high during this time of year.'
Emily Barnett, travel insurance expert at Compare the Market, said: 'This December, UK airports are predicted to be incredibly busy as the Civil Aviation Authority forecasts passenger numbers will exceed the record 22 million seen last year.
'It's advised travellers prepare for a busier-than-usual experience as it is expected there will not only be higher passenger volumes, but potentially challenging winter weather and knock-on delays.'
Last year, 295 million passengers flew through UK airports.
Estimates suggest the total passengers travelling may exceed 300 million passengers for the first time ever in 2025.

More than 90 million passengers passed through UK airports in the three months from July to September 2025
Selina Chadha, group director for consumers and markets at the UK CAA said: 'We now have more people flying than ever before and are on track for the biggest Christmas getaway in history.
'With high passenger numbers and the potential for bad weather that winter brings, make sure you check for disruption including on your route to the airport.'
It comes after it was announced Brits travelling around the country during Christmas will face an unprecedented rail network shutdown - as a staggering 32 days of works are set to cripple the UK's main lines, hitting 2,500 trains.
It means some journey times will triple as 15 million passengers take the train over the Yuletide fortnight to visit family and friends.
