US President Donald Trump made a major mistake when he began attacking Canada. A series of economic slights and veiled annexation threats upset Canadians and led them to fight back in a variety of ingenious ways.

Tariffs and sovereignty attacks

A boycott of American products quickly began after Trump slapped his first blanket tariff on Canadian imports to the US. However, while shunning goods from the United States has caused problems for Americans, another Canadian boycott has had a far more significant impact.

Avoiding travel to the US

Canadians have been avoiding travel to the United States ever since Trump announced his intention to go after Canada economically. The President likely had no idea just how bad things would get as a result of his terrible policy toward his northern neighbor.

Dropping numbers

Travel numbers have dropped significantly since Trump took office. According to recent data from Statistics Canada, preliminary numbers of air travel and vehicle returns from the US in November 2025 were down for the tenth consecutive month year-over-year.

What we know so far

According to data relayed to CBC News from Statistics Canada, between February and October 2025, Canadian air travel returns from the United States fell by 21% while land travel returns dropped by an even more staggering 31.5%.

A predictable situation

The Canadian boycott of travel to the United States should have been predicted by the Trump administration when the President began attacking Canada. Poll data from July revealed just how willing Canadians were to avoid traveling to the US.

Canadians are angry

According to the poll findings from Longwoods International, 63% of Canadians said that they were less likely to travel to the United States because of American politics or policies. However, this wasn’t the most interesting revelation from the survey.

Economic and political issues

Among the group less willing to travel to the US, 80% cited economic policies of tariffs as their reason for not wanting to travel to the United States. 71% of respondents said that political statements by American leaders were a major negative factor.

A staggering drop in travel

Overall, the US Travel Association has reported that inbound Canadian travel to the United States has dropped by a staggering 23% year-to-date (January to November), according to BBC News. This decline has been felt in some states far more than others. For example, Arizona may be one of the states at the top of the list of those most affected by the travel boycott.

Glenn Williamson, founder and CEO of the Canada-Arizona Business Council, believes Arizona will see a 20% to 30% reduction in the number of Canadians visiting the state in 2025, according to the Fountain Hill Times Independent. This is a big issue for the state.

Canadians are important for the state

In November, AZ Central reported Arizona saw 822,500 overnight visitors from Canada in 2023. These overnight Canadian travelers spent roughly $775 million in the state, according to a spokesperson from the Arizona Office of Tourism. However, Canadians spend far more in the state.

A snowbird problem in the making?

Canadian snowbirds, who are people who typically spend the harsh Canadian winters in Arizona, are reported to have a $1.4 billion impact in the state each year, based on data from the Canada-Arizona Business Council.

Exactly how bad the Canadian boycott of travel to the US is affecting Arizona so far isn't clear since there is no available data on the number of visitors from Canada to the state yet. However, the warning signs are flashing red for Arizona, and many other states.

Arizona isn’t the only state in trouble. A mid-December report from the Joint Economic Council revealed that border states have seen an average vehicle crossing decline of nearly 20% in 2025. Some border states have seen a drop as high as 30%.

A warning about Canadian travel declines

According to a February report from the US Travel Association, Canadians made up the top source of international visitors to the United States in 2024 with 20.4 million visitors. Canadians spent $20.5 billion in the US in 2024, which supported 140,000 jobs.

The US Travel Association saw the writing on the wall and noted that Trump’s economic and sovereignty attacks on Canada would result in lower travel to the United States. It was an issue that the association warned could have serious consequences.

“A 10% reduction in Canadian travel could mean 2.0 million fewer visits, $2.1 billion in lost spending and 14,000 job losses,” the US Travel Association warned. However, the estimate appeared to be far too low based on the current data.
