Map shows states facing storms this week as travel warnings issued

Forecasters say multiple storms are expected to impact the U.S. this week, bringing a combination of hazards to several states.

“A storm will move across the Great Lakes today, then into the Northeast tonight into early Wednesday. This can bring a swath of snow and ice from Michigan into central and northern New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine,” AccuWeather meteorologist Adam Douty told Newsweek on Tuesday.

“Several inches of snow will fall in northern New England, but icy conditions from freezing rain will be the biggest concern from central Michigan to New York and Massachusetts.”

A forecast map from the outlet shared with Newsweek on Tuesday showed that states that Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont could see 3-6 inches of snow Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday.

“Freezing rain can be the trickiest to travel in since it falls as rain and then freezes on contact due to surfaces being below freezing. What appears to be wet roads may have a glaze of ice on them,” Douty said. “Make sure to give extra time traveling, slow down and give extra space between you and the car ahead of you. If you can it may be best to wait to run errands until after the storm.”

Parts of these states have also been issued winter weather advisories from the National Weather Service (NWS), with the agency warning of hazardous road conditions.

Douty said a second storm system is expected to move through the Great Lakes and Northeast on Thursday night and Friday, bringing rain to all areas as well as snow to the far northern and western Great Lakes.

The outlet said in a Tuesday advisory that this strong storm system moving out of the West is expected to move from Texas toward the Great Lakes between Thursday and Friday. Pulling in moisture from the Pacific and the Gulf, it is forecast to bring a broad mix of rain, snow and thunderstorms across a large swath of the country. Forecasters say severe storms could develop in parts of the Ozarks and Mississippi Valley and may bring another round of wintry weather to sections of the Plains and Midwest.

“This coast-to-coast storm is expected to bring snow or a wintry mix from parts of Arizona and New Mexico through the Great Lakes and into northern New England,” AccuWeather’s Tyler Roys said in a Tuesday media advisory. “Travelers on the northern side of the storm should be prepared for slippery and hazardous road conditions, as well as possible travel delays.”
