THE RUNDOWN
- The 2026 Golden Globes nominations have been announced.
- Films like Hamnet, Marty Supreme and Frankenstein have nabbed nominations.
- There were some surprises and expected snubs, including Sydney Sweeney for Christy and Wicked.
- Historically, a Golden Globes nomination has boded well for Oscar hopefuls.
Awards season is officially underway, and the 2026 Golden Globes nominations have delivered a mix of well‑earned triumphs and deliciously chaotic snubs.
ELLE Australia’s favourite sensitive Aquarius, Paul Mescal, and the magnetic Jessie Buckley have emerged as early awards‑season darlings thanks to Hamnet, Chloé Zhao’s haunting adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s novel. Mescal scored a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his tender, melancholy take on William Shakespeare, while Buckley received a Best Actress (Drama) nod for her luminous, grief‑soaked portrayal of Agnes. Both are already being floated as likely Oscar contenders.
Australia also enjoyed its own moment in the spotlight: Rose Byrne earned a nomination for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, and Jacob Elordi, whose chemistry with Mia Goth in Frankenstein had us gripped, continues his ascent with a Best Supporting Actor nod. Timothée Chalamet, meanwhile, collected a Best Actor nomination for Marty Supreme, a performance many critics are calling his best yet. After narrowly missing out on Oscar recognition for A Complete Unknown last year, the nomination places him firmly back in next year’s race.
But where there are wins, there are snubs — and none louder than Sydney Sweeney’s absence from the ballot for Christie. Despite gaining 14 kilos of muscle and participating in real, brutal boxing matches for the role of Christy Martin, the film’s box‑office collapse — seemingly triggered by Sweeney’s American Eagle scandal and her refusal to address allegations of extremist political sympathies — appears to have cost her crucial awards‑season momentum. Wicked: For Good, which netted $750 million US at the box office, also missed out on nominations with only Cynthia Erivo receiving a nod.

The Golden Globe Awards are annual awards that recognise excellence in both film and television, across the United States and internationally. They’re presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) — a group of international journalists based in Hollywood.
Often seen as a major precursor to the Oscars, the Golden Globes are known for being a more relaxed, celebrity-packed event where both TV and film stars mix. They feature separate categories for drama and musical or comedy, which means more nominees (and more surprises) than other awards shows.
They’ve historically had a reputation for being unpredictable and occasionally controversial — but they’re also one of the first big red carpets of awards season, and often help shape the narrative for who’s most likely to take home an Oscar or Emmy.
